Women traveling solo over 50 living their best life

New York City Vibes

October 04, 20245 min read

New York City is on my repeat offender travel list. I just keep coming back again and again and again.

I worked her for 18 months many moons ago and I was hooked forever.

It’s easy to think of travel being about the sights, events but travel for me its about…

Having a purpose, give me a travel goal and I’m on it!

But travel is also about using all your senses to experience a place and create memories for a lifetime.

NYC is for many a sensory overload be warned but take a moment to just let all that energy wash over you…

For me the constant honking of cars and taxis is like an old familiar song that I recognize the lyrics to.

The smell of the subway and drains is pungent but so much part of the city vibe.

The hustle and bustle is broken up by blips of complete solitude…

The peace and calm of sipping a coffee at 7 in the morning in Bryant Park.

Hanging out on my friends hotel room balcony overlooking the UN where you can hear a pin drop in the silence where only a few blocks away is Grand Central Station and Times Square

For those that are returning to New York it kicks up powerful reminders…

My friend who shared her story of being kicked out of a souvenir store because she was asking too many questions on the price of t-shirts.

My other friend sharing how she had spent a couple of months as a 17 year old on mission work here - wowza that was one heck of an experience.

Reuniting with the friend I met working here 25 years ago rehashing work stories and our old “go to” places in the city plus the new ones we have discover.

The power of connection and reconnection through travel is profound. She lives in New Zealand, I live in Canada and here we are in NYC.

New York can be harsh, strident its people may appear brusque at times…

But take a beat and you will literally find the beating heart of New York.

Judy, the restaurant server who when we pointed out that she had only given us the bill for our drinks and appetizers and not our food…

Came back with the revised bill and had taken our drinks off the bill for being so honest!

This is a city that works if you’re traveling with friends family or solo and totally fit in.

To my friend who anchors her trips to NY first, foremost and always on booking her Broadway theatre shows and then everything else just slots in around them.

For the early birds aka me, who can be up and shopping at 8 in the morning and have the store to myself.

NY is a city full of stories, stop, look around you, look up.

Wander off the beaten path just a couple of blocks and you will step into a whole new world.

Soak in the lululemon clad women out on their moring jogs navigating the vendor carts being set up on the sidewalk.

Don’t bristle at the wave of people heads down coming towards you, instead embrace the very essence of this cities energy…

They’re on their way to work and may have commuted an hour or more before they are pounding the pavement to make the final leg to work.

Marvel in the skills and patience of the driver who picked you up from the airport. He or she spends hours each day sitting in traffic to move a few blocks or miles to get you to your destination.

Be a tourist and do the classic “touristy” things, NY is a city where you can be whoever you want to me.

Picture a group of smart successful women hanging out in the whispering gallery listening to their friend sing to them while weary travelers make their way to their train late at night…

Ummm yes that would be us.

Marinate in the feelings that hit you like a tsunami at times… the full on feeling of energy, adrenaline, chaos, excitement…

The familiar yet the totally new and different.

Oh and lets not forget the weather…

Again, its all part of the NY experience. Don’t worry if the sun is shining or its raining, this literally is an all seasons city.

Forgot your umbrella, who cares, buy one in one of the gazillion gift shops.

When was the last time you skipped over puddles crossing Park Avenue?...

Savor the moment, its one for the memory banks that will put a smile on your face for many years to come.

Revisit old haunts, be a total goofball.

Chillax at an outdoor cafe and you’ll pretty much see someone from every country in the world saunter or bustle by.

This is truly a city where there is no excuse to be anything other than “BEING”.

If you’re looking to transform…

To find yourself

An old piece of yourself

Reconnect to a deep part of yourself

Discover a new evolved self…

This is the place to BE!

New York City is NOT just a place its a FEELING!

I’m on a mission to inspire and encourage women over 50 to travel safely and with confidence to have the amazing experiences they deserve. If you’re looking for answers on all things travel from a woman over 50 perspective… Including details on traveling as a women, flying long haul biz class, to hiring private tour guides, staying at 5 star retreats on a budget, to choosing the right girlfriend to travel with and so much more. WHO AM I? I took my first flight at age 17 traveling 8,000 miles to live in another country for a year. I spent 20 years flying to work with my clients every week. And for fun I would jump on a plane to travel to new places or back to my home country of New Zealand to visit. And in the process racked up over 2 million frequent flyer miles. I get to live with my hubby and crazy golden retriever a stones throw from the jaw dropping beauty of the Canadian Rockies. These days I travel solo or with girlfriend(s) since hubby can’t travel like he used to.
