For so many women stepping into solo travel, it’s not just about picking a place on the map.
It’s about rediscovering how you like to travel now that you get to make all the choices.
Honour the Past, Embrace What's Next
Maybe you used to road trip with your partner, take cruises, or camp in the Rockies.
That was your travel style then.
But now? Things feel different. Maybe the idea of setting up a tent solo feels more stressful than serene.
You want the peace of nature and a comfy bed but you want to honour those days of camping. Maybe glamping is that transition option.
This is the beautiful part of solo travel: you get to choose.
You don’t have to negotiate over destinations or compromise on activities.
You can finally say yes to that art retreat in Italy or a train ride through the Scottish Highlands even if those were always “your” dream and not “ours.”
And if that little voice in your head whispers “Is it selfish to travel this way now?” let me say this gently but firmly:
No. It’s not selfish. It’s living your best life yet.
You’ve done the back-and-forth. You’ve made the compromises. This chapter? It’s about you!
Now depending on where you are in your solo travel journey, your style may still be evolving.
If this is your first trip alone or even just your first time planning one you might not have a clear picture yet.
That’s okay. Your solo travel style right now doesn’t have to be the one you stick with forever…
It will shift. Just like you will.
That Little Voice in Your Head? Totally Normal
Let’s be frank, there’s that little gremlin voice in your head messing with you as you plan your first solo trip.
One moment you’re picturing yourself watching a sunrise on a Greek island and then the gremlin crashes in shouting…
“What if I feel lonely?
What if I’m not cut out for this?”
That churn in your head is totally normal and yes very annoying because it can really sway our thinking and decision making.
Especially if you’ve recently gone through a big life transition like a divorce, illness, retirement, or the loss of a spouse.
Those changes leave you looking at life through a totally different lens.
Who are you anymore, what’s important to you?
I have been and in fact right there now with the loss of my husband recently.
The way I view my independence, energy and any dreams has completely shifted.
But it’s okay to second-guess. To miss having someone to bounce ideas off of. To worry if this solo travel thing will feel freeing… or just a little too quiet.
That inner voice is just trying to keep you SAFE, it doesn’t always know what you're truly capable of yet.
So I listen, I hear what the Gremlins have to say but then I remind myself of a some of the obstacles I’ve overcome or pushed through in life that took me to a better version of who I am…
And trust that not only can I do this but wow… am I ever going to be transformed in the process in a great way and so will YOU!
Before You Say Yes to a Travel Buddy...
Maybe you’ve found yourself wishing for someone to share the experience with.
A friend to laugh with over dinner or help split hotel costs. Totally natural…
And a common request seen in Solo Travel Groups on social media.
Just a word of wisdom here: traveling with another solo woman is a whole different ballgame.
Even if you’re both craving the same destination, your travel styles might be miles apart.
One of you might want morning yoga and early nights.
The other might be up for exploring local bars or sleeping in ‘til brunch.
So before you set off together, take time to understand your solo travel rhythm.
Then you can choose companions or experiences that truly match.
Your Travel Style Doesn't Have to Break the Bank
And yes, let’s talk about budget. It’s easy to think your travel style starts and ends with what you can afford. But what if you flipped that?
What if your budget didn’t dictate your style but instead supported it in new ways?
Maybe you stay at a charming boutique hotel instead of a big chain, or splurge on that once-in-a-lifetime dinner and save elsewhere.
Or you travel during shoulder seasons. Or use loyalty points for flights.
There are so many creative ways to make your travel dollar work for you—not the other way around.
But first? You need to know what you want.
