Women traveling solo over 50 living their best life

A wellness retreat like no other, where tranquility meets transformation

October 18, 202414 min read

You know when something is truly special that you keep going back and you’re reluctant to tell others...

Because you think by doing so you will break the magic of it all?

Well that’s exactly how I feel with what I’m about to share with you.

Why? Because I think YOU, yes YOU, the woman who keeps reading my blogs deserve to have this experience too!

I want this blog to inspire you. It’s about a very, very special wellness retreat that I’m about to go back to for the third and most certainly won’t be the last time.

Maybe you’ve had a spa day or gone away for a spa weekend but maybe you haven’t.

First off there is a HUGE difference between a resort and a retreat.

Check out my blog "9 Insider Tips for Choosing the Ideal Solo Wellness Retreat" which explains the difference and also how to select your wellness retreat:

You can find it by clicking >>> 👉HERE

Women traveling solo over 50 Kamalaya retreat wellness

So drum roll please…

The retreat I am going to share with you is Kamalaya and it is located on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand.

Kamalaya is a multi-award winning Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic and is celebrating its 19th anniversary this year.

You can find it by clicking >>> 👉HERE

What makes it so special?

The Location

First off the location, its not easy to get to. So the guests who make it here are truly on a mission of wellness.

Now I have to say I was a little disappointed on my last visit to see more people lying by the pool or on the beach scrolling on their phones.

Next, the physical site of Kamalaya has a centuries-old cave, once used by Buddhist monks as a place of meditative retreat.

And yes, like anything I share in my blogs I only share what I personally have experienced.

And I can tell you I have spent many early mornings or late evenings visiting the cave in quiet contemplation.

It’s difficult to put into words the energy, stillness, calm and at the same time a sense of revitalization when I sit for just a few minutes in quiet contemplation in the cave.

And you might be wondering at this point what’s in the name “Kamalaya”...

Kamalaya translates as Lotus (Kamal) Realm (alaya) in the ancient language of Sanskrit, symbolizing the unfolding of the human spirit.

The first time I went it was for 7 days.

The second time I went was for 4 weeks!

Women traveling solo over 50 Kamalaya wellness retreat

Kamalaya was recommended to me by a friend who I trust implicitly.

But still I was hesitant to jump on plane and travel 7,600 miles to this amazing place.

Thank goodness for my friend and also that feeling in my gut that I desperately needed something else in my life physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Kamalaya is on the island of Koh Samui about a 1 hour flight from Bangkok or about 2 hour flight from Singapore.

More about the island of Koh Samui in another blog.

Kamalaya is at the south east of the island which is a little further away from the tourist / resort area but you can easily take a taxi to other parts of the island if you want to.

Full confession… on my first visit to Kamalaya I did not leave the retreat for the full 7 days I had no desire to.

I’m being a little selfish here tourism is at the heart of the island of Koh Samui but it is about to explode given the recent filming of White Lotus at the Four Seasons.

I’m not sure thats going to be a good thing so I am grateful that Kamalaya is tucked away in a quieter part of the island.

The Property, What To Expect

The retreat is set on a hillside that runs down to a private beach.

Women traveling solo over 50 Kamalaya wellness retreat

At the top of the property is an amazing lap pool where you can swim or lounge while looking out to an uninterrupted view of the Gulf of Thailand.

Next to the lap pool is the gym and steam caverns.

Above the gym is the yoga pavilion. Picture a circular style room with floor to ceiling glass and again spectacular views of the Gulf of Thailand.

As you move down the property to the beach you fill find the longevity house, reception, the library and Tea Lounge.

Then there is the main restaurant.

Keep moving down towards the beach and you will find the Wellness Centre for all your treatments and the buddhist cave.

As you near the beach you will find covered dining spaces discreetly set in to the hillside to relax over lunch and lounge by or take a plunge in the leisure pool.

And finally you reach the beach which is set on a small lagoon that you can walk out to the edge of at low tide.

And sprinkled between are the various accommodations ranging from rooms to suites to villas.

Everything is designed and built to blend in with the natural formations of the hillside so nothing stands out.

Now A Couple Of Things About a TRUE Retreat!

First the silence. A retreat is NOT a resort so inside voices people.

A true retreat like Kamalaya is not a day spa where you can have a massage between calls back to the office.

In fact Kamalaya discourage the use of phones, tablets, laptops and any technology

To the point there are discreet wooden placemats at each table in the restaurant asking you not to bring any electronic devices… even to read on your kindle app.

The whole point is to “retreat” as in retreat from the crazy information overloaded, being on demand 24x7 that too many of us in the Western world take pride in belonging to.

On my first visit to Kamalaya I went all in and did a full digital detox.

Check my "Unplug & Recharge: My Digital Detox Experience at a Wellness Retreat" video on my YouTube channel here:

You can find it by clicking >>> 👉HERE

While you’re there could you do me a huge favour and give the video a like or comment if you get value out of watching and even better…

I would love it if you would subscribe to my YouTube channel.

Now I have to say I was a little disappointed on my last visit to see more people lying by the pool or on the beach scrolling on their phones.

I found even seeing the devices jarring and I gave Kamalaya the feedback.

Now don’t worry if you truly need to be connected they have a library with plenty of books and a couple of computers and some newspapers that you can stay connected to the bigger world out there. And…

You can use your cell phones and laptops in your rooms.

The Kamalaya Experience

Ok, first off I thoroughly recommend taking full advantage of Kamalaya sending a car to pick you up from the airport and bring you to the retreat.

Visualize being greeted by your driver in their welcoming buttery yellow coloured uniforms…

Stepping into the vehicle and receiving a cool towel and bottle of water

Listening to the soothing spa music softly playing while you are driven to the retreat…

Taking in the stunning views of the ocean and craziness of the motorbikes weaving in and out of the traffic.

Reveling in the passing by shops full of colourful items for sale in the shops you pass by.

Women traveling solo over 50 Kamalaya wellness retreat

When you arrive you realize you have truly arrived at a retreat.

Check in is seamless and you are welcomed like a long lost friend whether this is your first or 10th visit.

Your bags will be discreetly taken to your room and depending on where your room or villa is you may be taken by golf cart.

Note: I’ve mentioned the property is on a hillside so you will be doing a lot of up and down hill walking but if you need help a golf cart can be called to take you from point to point on the property.

You will also be informed of your wellness appointment. This is typically part of your experience whether you have booked a program or not.

Wellness Treatments

On my first visit I had booked a treatment program which was in short divine and transforming.

On my second visit I chose not to book a program. I was staying four weeks so had plenty of time to choose what treatments I wanted.

This is the great part of the Kamalaya experience…

Women traveling solo over 50 Kamalaya wellness retreat

Everything is so flexible and tailored to your individual needs a true hallmark of a wellness retreat.

In addition to the programs and treatments offer there is a monthly calendar of activities that you can take advantage of.

Some are paid activities like a cultural tour of the island or cooking class.

But most are more educational. Experts from around the world visit Kamalaya and will introduce you to a specific treatment or type of wellness therapy.

I found these sessions so insightful.

Added to that are activities like yoga, sound baths, Qi Jong, meditation and much more.

Your day can be literally filled with these activities before you add in any treatments.

Staying Alone At A Retreat

What I love about Kamalaya is that it is a great place to travel to alone.

On my first visit I observed probably 80-90% of the guests were on their own and the vast majority women.

On my second visit I observed more couples and also women traveling with a girlfriend.

Any worry about being a women on your own is totally dispelled at Kamalaya. This is truly a place that welcomes the individual YOU!

You’re probably also thinking this is going to cost a lot of money.

My response is yes and no…

Women over 50 traveling solo Kamalaya wellness retreat

What I love about Kamalaya is first off its in Thailand so compared to retreats in places like the US it is incredibly affordable.

And second is your ability to choose both the level of accommodation and the treatment package that best suits your needs.

And at this point can I also be so bold as to say…

Don’t look at it as a “cost” rather think of it as an INVESTMENT in your wellness and longevity…

Yes, you are finally after maybe decades of always being the one to put yourself at the bottom of the priority list to serve the needs of others…

This is your time to serve your needs!

And I can hear the question making its way across cyberspace to me…

But Raewyn I’m an introvert, I’m afraid I’ll be lonely but not the type of person to be a chatty Cathy.

Well that would be totally me too.

Kamalaya is the perfect place for me to go inward and spend some deep quality time just BEING ME in quiet and solitude.

But I will tell you being that quiet and that much solitude for 4 weeks on my second visit was daunting.

First off the staff are wonderful at connecting with you but secondly…

You will find conversation where and when you are ready for it will come naturally.

Even the pool is lovely and quiet but I found myself in quiet conversation with some other solo ladies staying.

Added to that you can choose to eat alone in the dining room or join the communal table if you are seeking company and conversation.

The Guests

I know many of the women I work with are still hesitant to travel alone or go to a retreat…

Why?

Because they think they don’t deserve it or won’t fit int… calling BS on both!

Let me reinforce this by giving you a snapshot of the type of guests you my encounter.

Women traveling over 50 solo Kamalaya wellness retreat

The owner and CEO of multiple European businesses who is suffering major burnout.

The Executive Admin from London who is also suffering burnout.

The Consultant from Switzerland recovering from a serious foot injury and surgery.

The women from Australia whose brothers sent her to Kamalaya for three weeks to rest and recover from her full time role as Carer for their mother who suffers from dementia.

The ER doctor from the US who at under 35 suffering full physical and psychological burnout from the stress of her job.

The woman from Europe who has been coming to Kamalaya every year for 11 years and is in the entertainment industry.

The list goes on.

You can also see from this list the need for a place like Kamalaya but also the diversity of guests but the thing guests have in common is…

They are at Kamalaya because they have reached breaking point or…

Recognized that they are about to reach breaking point or…

Are ready or in search of a holistic transformation to live a better life.

The Treatments

The word BLISS is the first word that comes to mind.

From having treatments, some where you are in a private room that opens out to a stunning view of the ocean and surrounding vegetation.

Women traveling over 50 solo Kamalaya retreat wellness

From a true french manicure that is to die for…

To an Indian massage that will have you oozing out of the treatment room…

To an asian foot massage or…

 Pranayama breath session…

The list goes on…

The point being when you are at Kamalaya you are working your mind, body and most importantly nourishing and replenishing your soul.

Just know that any and all treatments are going to have an impact and cumulative affect on transforming you to the new even better you.

All I can tell you is that I have not once been disappointed by a treatment that I have had even when I had no clue what the treatment was going to be haha.

Take a look at the types of treatments available at Kamalaya:

You can find them by clicking >>> 👉HERE

The Food

I’m so glad you asked haha.

Women traveling solo over 50 Kamalya retreat wellness

Well first of you’re in Thailand and the food is amazing. But at Kamalaya they take food to a whole new level.

Not only is it delicious, attractive, fresh, creative but its so dang healthy!!!

Added to the actual food experience you get to eat looking out at and amazing view even when its raining there is something special about your dining experience.

Women traveling solo over 50 Kamalya retreat wellness

Plus, lunching at one of the nooks and crannies tucked down by the leisure pool and beach add another dimension eating and eating healthy.

On my second visit I totally go into the groove of having a light meal by the pool after doing my laps.

The Accommodations

There is something to suit everyone.

Ok, I’m going to let you into a little secret here. On my first visit my bestie was originally going to join me so we totally splurged on the Penthouse Pool Suite.

It was total Nirvana…

My own private plunge pool with views of the Gulf of Thailand, a wonderful outdoor Day bed also with sea views.

And I was literally a few hundred feet from the lap pool - one of my fav activities.

Plus I had my own bedroom and living room.

I didn’t want to leave haha.

On my last visit I decided to try out a villa with a sea view. This was equally stunning and divine.

Women traveling solo over 50 Kamalya retreat wellness

I woke up each morning to see the sun rise over the beach without getting out of bed.

I will give you a heads up… you ironically don’t spend a lot of time in your room unless you choose to.

I have found my days filled with treatments, educational activities and swimming my laps.

If you are  wanting views you every type of room will have some type of jaw dropping view of the gardens, beach, ocean…

But equally there are so many amazing nooks and cranny spots on the property that you can tuck yourself away in and enjoy the view and solitude of your surroundings.

Women traveling solo over 50 Kamalya retreat wellness

So drum roll please…

The retreat I am going to share with you is Kamalaya and it is located on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand.

Kamalaya is a multi-award winning Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic and is celebrating its 19th anniversary this year.

You can find it by clicking >>> 👉HERE

What makes it so special?

The Location

First off the location, its not easy to get to. So the guests who make it here are truly on a mission of wellness.
