Women traveling solo over 50 living their best life

I never thought I would ever use one of these

October 25, 20245 min read

You've have the most amazing trip of a lifetime but...

It's time to head home and you get to the airport, place your luggage on the scale at check in and...

Shock, horror, you're over the weight limit!

Now the dilemma and the stress as the Airline Staff give you stink eye, let alone the passengers lined up behind you doing the hairy eyeball roll.

Women traveling solo over 50 luggage weight scale

Do you bit the bullet and pay the airline extortion rates for excess baggage?

Do you scurry off to a corner and try lightening the load…

Taking things out of your luggage and cram them into your carry on or layer up wearing 3 sweaters onboard?

I have witnessed so many people at the airport face this dilemma and the stress.

For those of you who have been reading along with my travel blogs for a while know that my mantra for you and myself when traveling is…

Reduce and eliminate stress wherever possible and focus on having amazing travel experiences that create memories for a lifetime.

Women traveling solo over 50 luggage scale

Now I’m going to sound like a total princess here but on long haul international flights I fly business class and I gotta admit the luggage allowance is one of things that I enjoy.

See my blog on Business Class travel... You can find it by clicking >>> 👉HERE

But whether you’re allowed one bag or two at the end of the day every airline has its own set of rules on how much a bag can weigh.

Add to that the prospect of a trip where you might be going to different countries and flying on more than one airline all those rules can just blow your mind…

And it gets super tricky if you’re flying to different locations with different weather and you need to be able to pack a combination of lightweight and heavier clothes.

And ladies, I don’t know about you but my biggest challenge is choosing how many pairs of shoes to pack which add weight and bulk to your bag.

Check out my tips on packing shoes by clicking >>> 👉HERE

For too many years I would play a lottery game when it came to whether my bag was going to be overweight or not.

I was pretty good at having “a feel for the weight of my bag” but by no means was that anywhere near a precise science.

So after 2 million plus frequent flier miles I finally decided it was time to remove one more potential stressor that might take away from the enjoyment of my trips.

So I bit the bullet, goodness knows why I didn’t do this a few thousand frequent flier miles ago…

I invested in this amazing little device… a luggage scale or what I like to call it…

My “Stress Reliever”!

Women traveling solo over 50 luggage weight scale

It’s a luggage scale…

🌟Yep, hook it around you bag…

🌟Turn it on…

🌟Flip the switch to pounds or kilos and…

🌟🌟🌟 Whaaa laah you know exactly how much your bag weighs before you ever leave home on your trip and…

You know exactly how much room you have for those purchases you make throughout your journey.

And seriously the cost of one of these vs. any baggage excess fees is a no brainer.

Here’s where you can find the one that I use >>> 👉Click HERE to get to my shopping page.

Women traveling solo over 50 luggage scale

They take up no space in your suitcase and they are surprisingly sturdy.

It allows you to switch between pounds and kilos so you can double, triple, quadruple check that your bag meets the airline guidelines.

🔥🔥🔥 HOT TIP 🔥🔥🔥

Weigh your bag empty, you would be surprised at how much a bag can weigh before you put anything in it.

Now, there are sometimes where you might deliberately choose to have or purchase a second bag and pay for that extra bag but…

You still want to stay within the bag weight limit for that extra bag.

I’ve run into this when I have traveled home to New Zealand.

I would travel down with my one checked bag and then I come home with gifts from family and all those things that I don’t get back home in Canada….

And ding, ding I need a second bag.

First off, I always check before I start my trip what the fees are for a second bag and budget for that as a “just in case” I decide to bring home a second bag full of goodies.

Next, if I’m at the end of my trip and need that extra bag…

I don’t buy an expensive piece of luggage.

In fact, my trick has been to purchase a soft sports bag which is a lot less expensive than even an inexpensive suitcase.

Ta da! I only need that bag to survive one trip. If it lasts longer than that then bonus.

Now, there have also been times when I know I am likely to bring a second bag of goodies home so again, I purchase and pack a soft sports bag which crunches down nicely in my suitcase.

When it comes time to return home, I just pop it out, fill it up…

Weigh it with my magical luggage scale and I’m good to go.

I’m on a mission to inspire and encourage women over 50 to travel safely and with confidence to have the amazing experiences they deserve. If you’re looking for answers on all things travel from a woman over 50 perspective… Including details on traveling as a women, flying long haul biz class, to hiring private tour guides, staying at 5 star retreats on a budget, to choosing the right girlfriend to travel with and so much more. WHO AM I? I took my first flight at age 17 traveling 8,000 miles to live in another country for a year. I spent 20 years flying to work with my clients every week. And for fun I would jump on a plane to travel to new places or back to my home country of New Zealand to visit. And in the process racked up over 2 million frequent flyer miles. I get to live with my hubby and crazy golden retriever a stones throw from the jaw dropping beauty of the Canadian Rockies. These days I travel solo or with girlfriend(s) since hubby can’t travel like he used to.

Now I’m going to sound like a total princess here but on long haul international flights I fly business class and I gotta admit the luggage allowance is one of things that I enjoy.
