There’s a first time for everything, even flying long-haul in Business Class.
And if you’ve never experienced lie-flat luxury, champagne before takeoff, and the sheer joy of stepping off a plane feeling refreshed instead of wrecked…
You might be feeling a little unsure right now.
Maybe even a bit self-conscious.
You might be thinking, What if I don’t know what to do? What if I stand out?
And if you’ve spent most of your life putting others first, part of you may even be wondering if you really deserve this experience.
Let me stop you right there: you do.
You belong here.
I remember my first time flying internationally in a Business Class pod.
I was excited but also quietly nervous.
Would I look like I didn’t belong? Would I fumble around with the buttons?
Would people think I was out of place?
If you’re a solo woman traveler over 50, I’m guessing some of these questions are floating through your mind too.
This week's blog is all about you feeling like you’ve lived in business class all your life!
The Airport Where The VIP Experience Starts
Well actually I should qualify that heading there are some airlines that may also include an airport transfer.
From the moment you arrive at the airport, the Business Class experience turns from the usual chaos, panic and stress to calm, serenity and genuine joy and excitement.
There’s a separate check-in counter, no long lines, no stressed-out crowds...
You’ll be handed your boarding pass which includes access to the airline lounge and your bags are tagged priority, which means they’ll be among the first to arrive on the carousel at your destination.
You will also have access to a priority security lane and in some airports you are escorted by staff through to security.
Air New Zealand in Auckland is an excellent example, the staff escort you to a private elevator that takes you up to a dedicated security lane.
Less waiting. Less juggling of bins and shoes and laptops…
Once you’re through security and potentially immigration (depending on the country you are departing from)...
I can see you're already breathing easier knowing what to expect, no more second guessing.
The Lounge: That Moment of "I could get used to this..."
Business Class lounges are quiet, stylish, and full of comforts.
And let's be blunt, the prospect of clean and uncrowded lounge bathrooms beats not having to use an airport bathroom any day.
Expect barista-made coffee, complimentary wine and champagne, food buffets or à la carte meals, and plenty of outlets for charging your devices and free wifi.
You’ll also find clean restrooms, and in many lounges showers…
Yes, I know you showered before you left home, showers are a true “pick me up” if you have back to back long haul flights.
Picture this I flew from Calgary to Vancouver and then onto Hong Kong where I had a 3 hour layover.
After 20 hours of flying including connections, let's just say even with a business class and a lie down pod I wasn’t exactly feeling fresh.
I still had a 3 hour flight to my final destination, Bangkok.
This was the perfect opportunity where I took a shower, changed my clothes and was ready to go again.
Lounge time for me is that perfect oasis where I get to be quietly excited that I am finally on my way to an amazing trip and experience.
FYI - not all lounges announce your flight is boarding so do ask when you enter the lounge.
It’s easy to get super comfortable and I wouldn’t want you missing your flight!
Lounge services even with the same airline can differ from airport to airport, country to country.
I always google to find details on the specific airport lounge I will have access to.
For example KLM has great information on all their lounges around the world:
https://www.klm.ca/information/airport/worldwide-lounges
And just as a reminder you will find plenty of other solo travelers hanging out in an airline lounge whether they are traveling for business or pleasure…
So traveling solo as a woman over 50, you will not feel out of place!
Boarding Like A Pro...
When it’s time to board, Business Class usually boards first or immediately after people requiring assistance.
You’ll hear “Group 1” or “Priority,” and that’s your cue.
Now given you will have plenty of space for your carry on you can choose to board at this time or any time while the rest of the plane is boarding.
And you will have your own dedicated line… enjoy that moment, you've done this and deserve it!
Personally, I like to get on and get settled.
As you board you will be greeted by a Flight Attendant and directed to your seat.
At your seat, you’ll find your own personal pod.
You’ll usually see a bottle of water waiting for you, as well as headphones (more on those in a moment) and your amenity kit.
Shortly after settling in, a flight attendant will offer you a pre-flight drink of your choice of juice, water, or champagne.
And yes, all alcohol in Business Class is complimentary.
But here's something that surprises people: I never drink alcohol when flying. Not even bubbly…
And I avoid carbonated drinks, too. (I’ve written a blog on how alcohol affects your body while flying, you can read it 👉HERE).
Getting Familiar With Your Pod
This is perhaps the most daunting part of your experience.
What are all the buttons and gadgets for?
Even the most seasoned business class traveler is not familiar with the pod configuration of every plane in every airline…
So you won’t be the only person looking to familiarize yourself with your pod.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK YOUR FLIGHT ATTENDANT!
Your flight attendants are there to keep you safe and make you comfortable and have a pleasant experience.
If you’re unsure, do ask, they love to help…
If you’re unsure, do ask, they love to help…
Just pick your moment. Flight attendants are often busy during the boarding process so waiting until you are in the air may be a better time to ask where they have the time to spend with you.
And 👉 HERE is a short video walking through the layout of a pod on a KLM flight.
First storage…
There is ample space in the overhead bin for your carry on.
From a good etiquette point of view do use the space directly above your pod.
You will also typically have a compartment that contains your complimentary headset and remote (in some cases) for your entertainment monitor.
I also find this compartment has a lid so it's handy for storing my eyeglasses when I want to bed down for some sleep or storing my watch and earrings while sleeping etc.
There is often an open compartment on the side of your seat for storing a water bottle etc.
And… There is generally storage for a small carryon bag for under the foot rest.
Amenity Kits and/or Pyjamas…
Now not all business class experiences are the same. However, most airlines will provide some kind of amenity kit.
You will find it on your seat or sitting on that compartment ledge.
You can expect to find a toothbrush, toothpaste, eye mask… after that you may or may not find things like…
A comb, socks or slippers, lip balm, skin care products, ear plugs, tooth pick etc…
And some airlines will also provide a pair of lounging pyjamas that you can change into sleep and yes, you get to keep your amenity kit and the pyjamas!
Tip: because it's not always clear what might be in your amenity kit or whether you will receive pyjamas I always pack a pair of socks and a change of clothes in my carry on just in case.
Then entertainment…
You can expect to have access to movies, tv shoes and music entertainment and a complimentary headset.
You might find a remote control in that compartment I mentioned above and these days you can expect a touch screen for making your selections directly on the monitor.
The one thing I always check before I bed down for the evening is how to turn the monitor off so that it is dark…
And also how to dim the display so that it is still visible but just not too bright and in my face when the cabin lights are dimmed if I am watching a movie.
And your seat/bed and lighting
So we touched on the entertainment monitor display above but you will find you have the typical light above your head and also a light on the side of your seat about shoulder height.
This is a great reading light.
I like to know how to turn these off or on before you get settled in for sleep and often the thing that I have to ask for help on.
The easy ones are those bendy ones on an arm.
The tricky ones are the size of a golf ball and built into the side of your seat and depending which way you turn it, it turns off or on…
They still get me.
And of course if you are in a window seat (my personal favourite) you also have to deal with your window shade.
You might have the classic pull the shade down but on newer planes there is a button with dots on it below your window.
Pressing this makes the window go lighter or darker.
Seat Secrets And Why I Choose The Front Row
Now lets back track for a moment and talk about seat selection.
Of course any seat in business class is going to be great but…
I always select a seat near the front of the cabin.
Now, some people avoid these seats because they’re close to the galley and bathrooms but I’m over 50 and like to be near a bathroom.
Whose with me ladies?
I do not want to be doing the “pee pee dance” in my seat because dinner is being served or…
There’s a line up after a meal because everyone wants to use the bathroom.
And last but not least I don’t want to be stumbling around in the dark if I have to get up during the night.
Another key factor in selecting a seat near the front of the cabin is you’ll be served your meals first…
Which means you can finish eating earlier and bed down sooner for sleep.
And in the morning, while everyone else is just getting their breakfast trays, you can scoot off to the lav to freshen up before landing.
It’s one of those little details that makes a big difference.
Now the trade offs are that you might hear a bit of noise coming from the galley as the Flight Attendants go about their duties…
And sometimes people forget to close the curtain behind them when they enter the galley areas and the light might disturb you.
And yes, I do still love a window seat…
I know a lot of long-haul flights are over night but I just love the magic of viewing everything as we take off and land and… sometimes the night sky can be spectacular.
Dining At 35,000 Feet
Sometimes the menu’s are at your seat and sometimes they will be passed out by the Flight Attendant.
Once you’re airborne you can expect to be offered a cocktail or wine and snack.
Meals are typically 3-4 courses made up of…
An entree or appetizer
Salad
Main
Dessert and/or Cheese Board
Coffee and Liquour
There will also be a selection of wine pairings to go with your meal and your meals on real linen placemats with glassware and dinnerware, not plastic!
Also meals are a leisurely experience.
Don’t worry if you can’t immediately figure out how your table is activated, again your flight attendant will help you.
I’ve seen many flight attendants having to wrestle to get the table tray up and ready for you.
Many airlines now also offer “dine on demand” where you can choose when you want to eat.
After the evening meal is served, light snacks are placed at the front of the cabin which you can help yourself to during the flight if you get the munchies in the middle of the night.
On long haul flights breakfast is typically served 90-120 minutes before landing.
The flight attendants will typically ask you before you bed down if you want to be woken for breakfast or not.
Personally I try even on a 12-14 hour flight to only have one meal and maximize my sleep time.
And you will see seasoned travelers skipping dinner and bedding down right away if the flight has a late evening departure.
Getting Some Sleep... Aaah Bliss
My favourite part of the experience...
After dinner, the cabin dims and it's time to bed down or get comfortable settling into some movie time..
You can recline your seat into a full lie-flat bed.
Most airlines provide a mattress topper, pillow and light weight blanket or comforter.
Flight attendants are more than happy to help you set up your bed.
This is a great opportunity to slip to the bathroom change your clothes before you settle in for some sleep time.
Likewise you can make your bed yourself but if this is a new experience for you let the flight attendants help you.
I carry a light weight cotton T-shirt and cotton harem pants for sleeping in.
They pack down nicely in your carry on and wearing natural fabrics will really cut down on any static and itching given to the lack of humidity onboard.
Another quick tip…
I personally don’t use the airline-provided headphones, as they can get uncomfortable on a long flight and instead use my own ear buds.
Waking Up And Getting Ready To Land
About 90 minutes before landing, lights start to gently rise.
You’ll be served breakfast or not as I mentioned or not.
If you are having breakfast and are still asleep the flight attendant will gently wake you.
Another reason I like to have a seat at the front of the cabin is so that I can change and freshen up while others are still being served their breakfast.
Arrival: A Smooth Landing In More Ways Than One
Business Class passengers disembark first, which means you’ll breeze through immigration more quickly.
Your priority bag will likely be waiting for you (fingers crossed) by the time you reach the baggage carousel.
And here’s the best part you’ll walk out of that airport feeling human!
No swollen ankles. No sore back. No exhaustion…
Just calm confidence, ready to take on your destination.
Final Thoughts...
If this is your first time flying Business Class long-haul, I promise it’s not as intimidating as it might seem.
You do belong!
You do deserve this!
The flight attendants are here to literally wait on you hand and foot… so let them!
Business Class isn’t just about the seat, it’s about the way it makes you feel…
Valued, confident, and ready for whatever adventure awaits when the wheels touch down.
The first time you fly Business Class is a little like the first time you travel solo you’ll never forget how it feels to cross that invisible threshold into something new.
And once you’ve done it, you’ll carry that confidence into so many other areas of your life.
Because it’s not just about flying, it’s about proving to yourself that you deserve to dream a little bigger.

Women Over 50: Travel Safe, Confident and Connected
So cheers to wheels up to winging your way on your next travel building lasting memories.

Women Over 50: Travel Safe, Confident and Connected
So cheers to wheels up to winging your way on your next travel building lasting memories.
