I’m not crazy about saying this ladies but FACT: traveling over 50 solo is harder than when we traveled in our 20s.
I’ve done more than my fair share of red-eye flights when I was a road warrior back in my consulting days.
These days I try to avoid a Red Eye Flights but occasionally it's the only practical option…
However, while we have control of all the choices we make when it comes to traveling, occasionally it may make practical sense to take a Red Eye flight.
So rather than viewing it as a big pain in the butt which is easy to do…
I look to minimize the things that I struggle with and focus on some of the upside.
My goal is not to just survive but to thrive and here’s how I do it.
It all starts with having a process, I know I can see some of you rolling your eyes at me but bear with me.
So many people focus only on the flying part of the Red Eye but the key is all in what you do to prepare for the flight and what you do once you land.
The first hurdle to overcome with a Red Eye flight is reducing the anxiety around
turning up to the airport on the right night to depart.
Sounds simple enough but I have never forgotten my husband and I many years ago (well actually decades) when we were flying from New Zealand to the US to Mexico.
We reached the US and were staying for a few days with my husbands brother and wife before we were to take a Red Eye flight to Mexico City.
Now all those years ago we didn’t have the advantage of some of the things I’m going to mention in this blog.
For context picture cell phones being the old big brick things and making long distance calls cost the equivalent of a house mortgage.
Anyhoo… we did the classic.
We had enjoyed a lovely dinner and before I went to bed I decided to check the paper itinerary as a double check for our Mexico flight details for the next evening.
Imagine my horror when I realized that we should have been at the airport right then NOT the next night!
Thanks to some heavy tap dancing on a call to Aero Mexico they managed to get us on that flight the next night phew!
So to understand how easily this mistake can happen lets first look at what EXACTLY is a Red Eye Flight.
The term “red-eye flight” refers to overnight flights that usually depart late in the evening and arrive early in the morning. The origin of the term comes from passengers’ red, tired eyes upon arrival due to the challenge of getting quality sleep on board.
Most red eye flights leave just after midnight and then arrive at their destination early in the morning.
That means the departure date on your flight is one day after the day you need to be at the airport to board you flight.
So, step one in having a smooth flight and reducing anxiety is to…
DOUBLE, TRIPLE, QUADRUPLE check what DAY your flight leaves and the NIGHT you need to show up at the airport.
Now thanks to modern technology unlike the brick cell phone back in the day you can have your flights loaded into your calendar on your phone.
Take it one step further and set an alarm or appointment for the date before aka the night you need to go to the airport.
Have someone else double check that you have the right dates and times.
The success of not just surviving but thriving your red eye flight is all on what happens before you leave home…
So lets dig in.
Make sure you are all packed carry on and checked luggage a full day before you will be going to the airport.
You want the day and evening you head to the airport to be as stress free and switch off the brain as much as possible.
By packing ahead of time you won’t have your mind buzzing about...
Whether you should change an outfit you’ve packed or going through a mental checklist of what you should or shouldn’t have packed…
And do you have everything.
If you are doing that on the “day of” your brain stays switched on and it is just so much harder to wind down.
One of the biggest challenges with a red eye flight is not only getting enough sleep but just being in a mentally and physically relaxed state.
LOL, I can hear the resounding “Dohs” winging across the internet at me as you read this.
Well, Raewyn I’m going to be sleeping 😴💤.
And absolutely that is the objective to get as much sleep as possible on your flight.
But…
Sometimes that just isn’t going to happen.
There is nothing worse than sitting on a plane in the middle of the night at 30,000 feet in the air wide awake and wired😳!
I always have a bunch of movies/tv shows downloaded on my iPad or laptop, Podcasts and music playlist…
And even a paperback book.
Now again you might be thinking why not just rely on the inflight entertainment?
Well more and more airlines and flights are providing minimal inflight entertainment or… rely on you having downloaded the airline flight app to be able to watch anything.
Also, I like to be considerate of my fellow passengers and don’t want to bother them with light from the monitor in the back of the headrest.
I can turn an iPad or laptop screen away from my fellow passengers and avoid disrupting their a ability to sleep - lucky devils!
The good news is that again thanks to technology you can check into your flight on most airlines 24 hours in advance.
This is HUGE, you want to minimize activities and making decisions on the evening of your flight. There are a couple of reasons for this tactic…
First, you want to maximize your time at the airport just chilling and quietly winding down for getting onboard and catching some shut eye.
Second, you want to avoid the potential of any glitches for example the check in kiosks are not working properly.
There are very few staff around in the late evening at the airport so “help” will not be so readily at hand.
And by heeding that 24 advance check in you stay on track for going to the airport on the correct night!
Yep, its technology again. When you have those text and email alerts turned on its going to keep you on track for getting to the airport on the right night.
But also, I have had the occasional flight delay on a red eye flight.
The ability to stay at home resting for another hour rather than just sitting around the airport can be a life saver.
Now that you have your check in taken care of, those alerts turned on and a game plan for your flight you can actually take the time to relax and rest before you head to the airport.
I will typically have an early light meal and then “get horizontal” for at least a couple of hours before getting ready and heading to the airport.
Notice, I said “get horizontally”, if I manage to get a bit of shut eye while lying down I treat that as a bonus.
Personally I struggle with a nap. While it might be good for me I wake up and absolute grumpy pants.
So I tend to go for just lying down and resting my body.
What is most important that my body can stretch out and relax before being placed in upright position in a plane set.
Just double check that your flight is on time before you lie down.
Now if sleeping and lying down is not for you then pick another relaxing activity to relax your body and mind…
It could be anything from taking a bubble bath or practice some meditation.
My whole strategy for reducting stress and anxiety is to take any guessing or wiggle room out of getting me to the airport safely and on time for my flight.
So I not only have a plan for who is going to get me to the airport but I have a backup plan.
🔥🔥🔥Hot Tip🔥🔥🔥: While it is wonderful when family offer to take you to the airport I only a family member who is in the house with me take me to the airport.
I don’t want the stress of tapping my toes waiting for a friend or family member making their way from their place to mine to pick me up.
Remember they are coming out late at night to take you to the airport.
Instead over the years I have learned that no matter how well intended family and friends might be...
I leave it to the professionals to pick me up and take me to the airport.
After all its their job to pick you up. You are part of their schedule so the reliability factor is much higher.
Now take your pick whether its an Uber, Taxi or a Private Car Service.
Thanks to all those years as a Road Warrior I have a regular Driver who picks me up.
I always allow extra time to get to the airport. That way if there are any hiccups like crazy traffic or the driver running late I still have that wiggle room to comfortably get to the airport.
And yes, I would rather spend that extra time sitting at the airport then stressing out looking out my window wishing my driver to turn up ;-)
I also always have a backup plan. It might be me jumping in my own car and making the mad dash to the airport whatever I have that backup plan.
There is now way I am going to miss that flight to that amazing trip I have planned.
And… yes, I even confirm with my driver early in the evening before I have that little lie down that he/she is on track to still pick me up in a few hours.
Overall I’ve been super lucky over the years but I have had the odd occasion where my taxi didn’t show up
Key to relaxing and feeling somewhat rested is what you wear on your flight.
I keep it super simple and not particularly glam.
I always use a layer system.
I know I drone on about how the cabin can be too hot or too cold, well I do that for a reason.
I find that red eye flights tend more often than not to be on the too cold side.
I get it, the pilot and co-pilot are flying us safely to our destination and they want to stay wide awake and alert hence keeping the air on the cold side.
So I plan for that.
Here are my “Go Tos”
My Allbird Sneakers, keeping my feet toasty warm. Seriously its like wearing a pair of slippers.
I will wear loose cotton pants or harem pants.
I always, always have my trust pashmina with me and…
Equally important a baseball cap. The reason its a baseball cap as opposed to any hat is twofold.

I like window seats on Red Eyes but even when the lights are turned down there is a strip light that runs above the windows. The beak on the baseball cap cuts out that light.
And I do always have a eye mask as well.
And finally even if I am flying to a warm climate I will have a soft jacket or sweater with me. I can use this as a pillow and also to layer up if I need to.
Once you’re at the airport it is time to chill. If you’re lucky and have an airline lounge access take full advantage of it for finding that quiet space to hang out.
🔥🔥Hot Tip🔥🔥🔥: Check whether the airline lounge will be open. Some lounges close earlier in the evening and do not accommodate passengers on red eye flights.
Now I know you will be constrained by your boarding zone but even of you are down the list on the zones for boarding be one of the first in your zone.
The whole point is to get onboard and get settled in and to be able to maximize getting as much rest and sleep in as possible.
Don’t bother staying awake for Inflight Service… at most carry water on with you to stay hydrated.
You can always tell the experience flier on red eye and long haul flights.
You will see them (including me) bed down and maximize that sleep.
And If you can’t sleep then time to pull out that movie or podcast… Just always be respectful of others re how bright your screen is.
It also goes without saying that avoid caffeine, alcohol and carbonated drinks.
They play havoc with your body to begin with and especially on a flight where you want to get some sleep.
Check out my blog on 👉👉👉 Body Facts You Need To Know When Flying✈️!
Ok first up I always have a window seat for a Red Eye. I can lean my head up against the window. And…
🔥🔥🔥Hot Tip🔥🔥🔥: I discreetly use antibacterial wet wipes to wipe down the wall first!!! Just sayin!
If you prefer a neck pillow go for it… I have a long neck so they don’t work that well for me
Wear a soft jacket as this can act as a pillow pushed up against the wall or you can place on your tray and lean forward to rest your head.
Planes also have a lot of white noise so pack some small ear plugs to help block out some of that distraction.
Do take the time to wake up BEFORE you land… There is nothing worse then feeling groggy and stumbling off the plane in a daze.
Most Red Eyes typically land around sunrise.
This is where you get to thrive…
Take a moment to soak in the wonder of an amazing SUNRISE as you descend…
Enjoy the quiet of the airport where it isn’t yet crazy busy with travelers who are already out of sorts.
Be proud of yourself for still being able to do the odd Red Eye now that you’re over 50 and not only survive it…
But feeling pretty dang good!
Now last but not least…
STAY UP for the rest of the day, it really does beat the jet lag
If you can get a shower and change clothes and you will be good to go for the day and the rest of your trip!

So cheers to wheels up to winging your way to your long dreamed of destination.
