Women Over 50: Travel Safe, Confident and Connected

Unwinding at the Fairmont Banff Springs Spa

March 16, 20257 min read

Ok ladies who doesn’t love a spa day?

It is one of the best “luxury travel splurges” you can treat yourself to when traveling.

Solo travel doesn’t always have to be about jumping on a plane to go somewhere.

If you are a newcomer to solo traveling I highly recommend finding somewhere close to home to start with. And a spa day or weekend can be the perfect first solo travel tip.

Now I just happen to be super lucky in that I live at the foot of the Canadian Rockies so…

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, within the Banff National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage site—the Fairmont Banff Springs Spa offers a unique, luxury, must have experience that goes beyond simple relaxation.

Living just an hour and fifteen minutes away from this legendary locale, I count myself incredibly lucky to have such a world-class retreat right on my doorstep.

And just to bring home the point Banff National Park happens to be No. 7 on Architects Digest "The 21 Most Beautiful Places in the World".

Tap 👉 HERE to read the article.

The Journey Begins

Fairmont Banff Springs Spa

On a snowy morning in March that transformed the roads into a picturesque yet skating rink like driving conditions, my girlfriend from Atlanta and I set off for our spa day.

Despite the snow and road conditions driving up, which turned into a bit of a 😬white-knuckle journey and all part of the adventure, we arrived.

The warm welcome we received from our estheticians, who managed to still give us nearly our full 90-minute facial appointments, was nothing short of remarkable.

I have never been more in need of massaging out some kneck and shoulder tension after that drive.

First Impressions

While the roads were a bit of a mess my girlfriend was delighted with the fairy tale view of snow hanging off the trees and fantastic views of the mountains.

Banff Fairmont Hotel

The decor of the spa is more traditional and in keeping with the Banff Springs Fairmont Hotel which looks a bit like a castle.

The spa, set against the backdrop of a snow-draped landscape, presents a fairy tale-like vision with each window framing the majestic Canadian Rockies.

My Bestie snagged a treatment room that had a floor to ceiling window with drop dead gorgeous views of the snow capped mountains and trees.

The traditional decor is fitting given the stately grandeur of the Banff Springs Hotel, which resembles a grand old castle, giving the spa experience a magical feel.

We were greeted by our cheery reception staff from around the globe—thanks to Banff's appeal to those on working holiday visas—we were instantly assured of both a professional and welcoming start to our day.

Unique Spa Experience

Fairmont Banff Springs Spa

Rather than a vast, sprawling space, the spa's layout feels intimate and cosy even though there are 4,000 sq feet of facilities.

Its like having a spa in our own 5 star luxury mountain cabin.

The cozy arrangement includes separate areas for men and women, along with co-ed lounges, whirlpools, and saunas.

If you happen to be staying at the Fairmont, access to the Fitness & Aquatic Centre is included.

For visitors like us coming from Calgary or staying elsewhere in Banff, a spa treatment includes three hours access to all the spa facilities… absolute bliss!

Treatment and Relaxation

Fairmont Banff Springs Spa

Opting for a 90-minute facial, my best friend and I, veterans of a few spas around the world, were looking for an experience to rival our gold standard set in Budapest, Hungary.

The treatment was profoundly relaxing, to the point of snoring—a testament to its effectiveness and a little secret we giggled about post-session.

We know it is a great treatment when you find yourself either falling asleep 😴 or snorting/snoring lol!🤭

My super sensitive skin was pampered with top-notch products, reinforcing the spa's commitment to quality without compromise.

After our treatments, we both embraced solitude…

Actually truth be told we didn’t organize where would meet and there are so many places we must have kept passing each other.

This speaks to why this is an excellent "solo" travel option!

My first stop was spending some time unwinding in the co-ed relaxation room where I nestled into a chaise tucked up with a faux fur blanket, lost in the serene views of fresh snow on the trees and mountains.

Turns out my Bestie had found the womens lounge and was curled up there relaxing.

The snack selection matched the standard of the treatments and facilities, ranging from healthful smoothies and teas to indulgent muffins and savoury treats.

My personal fav was the date and oat bar - delish!

Rather than trying to list all the treatments and amenities I've dropped a link so that you can check them out for yourself:

https://www.fairmont.com/banff-springs/spa/the-fairmont-banff-springs-spa/

What I also love is that they control the flow of people so it does not feel crowded. Just quite chill with a great international chill vibe.

More Than Just a Spa

Fairmont Banff Springs Spa

Our day extended beyond our facial treatments.

We spent time getting some swimming laps in the indoor saltwater pool.

And I took a quick dip into the heated outdoor pool amidst falling snowflakes…

I know sounds crazy but you have to try it!.

It’s and exhilarating must-try experience once in a lifetime experience while taking in those breathtaking mountain vistas.

Meanwhile my Bestie enjoyed the whirlpool's tucked into the stone giving you an outdoor experience while tucked up warmly in side.

I love that there is no skimping on the amenities like hairdryers and flat irons, when it comes to getting ready to leave and join the real world again.

Luxury Value On An Affordable Budget

Oh and for our lovely ladies from the US as I write this article the US dollar goes a long way when traveling in Canada… $1 USD to $1.44 CAD

That means a “90-Rocky Mountain Stress Relief Massage” at $319 CAD translates to $222 USD.

Compare that to a 80 minute massage at the Mandarin Oriental New York City at $345 USD.

Conclusion

The Fairmont Banff Springs Spa is a sanctuary where the beauty of nature meets the height of pampering.

It is an ideal spot for a splurge-worthy retreat, whether you're traveling solo or with a friend.

The staff's dedication to five-star service and the thoughtful management of guest flow ensure a peaceful, never overcrowded experience that feels both personal and luxurious.

For those contemplating a spa day here, the value is exceptional, especially with the favourable USD to CAD exchange rate making it an enticing option for American visitors.

Before departing, we capped our visit with a leisurely lunch. You're not spoiled for choice at the hotel for places to eat and continue to enjoy that view.

Alternatively Banff offers a wide choice of dining options to satisfy any craving.

Traveling With Friends
