Travel Rituals & Routines: Why They Matter for Women Traveling Solo Over 50

June 09, 20254 min read

There’s something deeply comforting about the familiar especially when it comes to travel and solo travel!

Sure, we jump on a plane filled with excitement for all the exciting new things we will experience but…

Even in the middle of all that newness, we carry our habits, our little rituals, and our daily routines right along with us.

Most of the time, we don’t even realize we’re doing it.

Just like brushing our teeth the same way every morning, our travel habits follow us from one destination to the next.

They’re subtle...

They’re like an automatic reflex kicking in.

And when you're traveling solo, especially for the first time…

Or, after years of traveling with a partner, those habits become your secret travel companion. They anchor you.

They soothe the nerves that come from constant change.

And they help you face the unfamiliar with just a bit more confidence.

Routines From The Past... and What Happens Now

Maybe when you traveled with your spouse or partner, you had your own unspoken system…

🎟️You handled the tickets and 🛂 passports…

🧳He took care of the bags and 🅿️ airport parking. You’d fall into step, knowing who did what and when.

But now?

It’s just you.

Which means it’s worth taking a moment to pause and ask:

🌐What were those travel habits I had?

🌐Which ones do I want to keep?

🌐And what new ones do I need to create?

This isn’t about reinventing the wheel…

It’s about recognizing what makes you feel grounded and prepared, so you can show up for your adventures with ease, excitement, and energy.

My Travel Rituals

I’m thinking about a recent one-day work trip I took.

Nothing dramatic, just a quick hop, but it reminded me how many travel habits I’ve carried over from my “Road Warrior” days (20 years of back-to-back business trips will do that!).

Here are just a few that make my life simpler:

💎The Same Carry-On Bag I use it for 90% of my trips. It’s like an old friend. I know where everything goes and don’t waste time hunting for things.

💎Pouches for Everything One for tech, one for toiletries, one for snacks.

💎It’s my version of organized chaos, but it works.

💎 Things always in the same pocket or pouch... Non-negotiable.

💎 Apple Wallet and a Paper Boarding Pass Yes, both. I love my tech but I like a backup too. Passport as ID even for domestic flights It’s just easier.

💎 No fumbling with a driver’s license and phone screen at security.

💎 A Gentleman’s Handkerchief

This one might sound quirky, but I always carry a traditional man’s hanky. It’s practical, yes but it’s also a quiet nod to my late husband.

A reminder that he’s still with me, in his own way, wherever I go.

Even with over 2 million frequent flier miles and many, many solo trips I still have these small rituals…

Everything organized by the 🚪 front door before I leave the next morning.

The Post It Note on my carry on bag to remind me to grab my phone and charger.

Double (maybe even triple) checking that I have my passport, drivers license and credit cards…

These rituals bring me calm!

They also move me into “Travel Mode” and keep me focused.

Travel habits create confidence if you’re navigating solo travel after years of “we travel,” know this…

The shift is real, and you’re not alone.

The good news?

Building your own solo travel habits isn’t hard.

In fact, you probably already have a few.

Maybe you always get to the airport early.

Maybe you have a favourite snack for the plane.

Maybe you pack the same cozy scarf or download the same feel-good show for the flight.

All of that matters.

It’s what makes the chaos of travel feel just a bit more… you.

Start Here...

As you get ready for your next adventure, take a moment to notice:

🧭 What rituals make you feel prepared and at ease?

🧭 Are there any past routines that no longer serve you?

🧭 What new habits would make solo travel feel smoother, safer, or more joyful?

Trust me, this small bit of awareness makes a BIG difference!

You’re not just building a new way of traveling you’re creating a rhythm that’s all your own.

So go ahead, pack your bag the way you like it.

Keep the paper boarding pass if it makes you feel better.

Bring that book, that playlist, that familiar hand cream.

You’ve got this! Here’s to new adventures… wrapped in old comforts.

I’m on a mission to inspire and encourage women over 50 to travel safely and with confidence to have the amazing experiences they deserve. If you’re looking for answers on all things travel from a woman over 50 perspective… Including details on traveling as a women, flying long haul biz class, to hiring private tour guides, staying at 5 star retreats on a budget, to choosing the right girlfriend to travel with and so much more. WHO AM I? I took my first flight at age 17 traveling 8,000 miles to live in another country for a year. I spent 20 years flying to work with my clients every week. And for fun I would jump on a plane to travel to new places or back to my home country of New Zealand to visit. And in the process racked up over 2 million frequent flyer miles. I get to live with my hubby and crazy golden retriever a stones throw from the jaw dropping beauty of the Canadian Rockies. These days I travel solo or with girlfriend(s) since hubby can’t travel like he used to.
